Friday Flyer

Posted by AllieB on June 24, 2011

Clark Howard has a program on his daily talk show on Fridays called the Friday Flyer. As I’ve mentioned before, I love all things Clark Howard, so I’m going to have one too. Last week I talked about Yacht Week and how I wanted to go (incidentally, yet another person with whom I am acquainted is now going and they’ll be on the Southern Croatian route – hint: it’s not me :|), and this week I share with you a collection of roof top bars across the world. I’ve actually been to one of them, which is why I’m even talking about it – sometimes I have to one-up myself to bolster my spirits.

Drinks on patios are my favorite thing, but drinks on a patio that is on a roof with a dramatic cityscape is really my favorite thing – case in point: The Sky Bar in Bangkok. It’s on the 64th floor of the second tallest building in the city. Kewl, right? That one in Madrid looks awesome, too….traveling is my favorite.

Here are some interesting facts with which to dazzle a member of the opposite sex this weekend – forget cheesy pick-up lines, drop a truth bomb of truth and I bet you’ll get way further:

  • A sneeze travels out your mouth at over 100 m.p.h. – upon saying this, I think it would be funny to sneeze
  • A giraffe can clean its ears with its 21-inch tongue – ew
  • Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying – I wonder if that’s really true?
  • Whoever you were trying to talk to has definitely walked away by now. But at least you’re smarter than you were a second ago.

Titillating conversation starters, all of those.

While it wasn’t the Sky Bar in BKK, the vista from Kramerica’s patio last night was pretty dec…as was my carne asada taco from Tex’s Tacos. I try to have at least one/week, and they get better every time. So do the lime chips. And the guac.

Happy weekend, Friendsicles*

*I borrowed this from the QT email that blew up the internet yesterday…most ridiculous story eva. That’s pretty much the only part of the email I can reference.

Wishful thinking

Posted by AllieB on June 17, 2011

It’s summer, ergo I have it in my head that I ought to be going on some kind of awesome trip. Summer = vacation. I’ve got some trips lined up, all of which I’m very excited about, but there’s nothing on the books akin to the Chateau, and I’m kind of bummed. Yacht Week is also not on my agenda, and I’m pretty upset about that, too. A friend of mine is going and doing the Southern Croatian route. I love all boats; Croatia is on my top 10 list; it is literally my dream vacation.

Yeah, that’s not going to be any fun at all.

I guess I did go to Pakistan in February…but that was a mission trip where I was doing totally selfless deeds the entire time, without a single self-serving thought crossing my mind…so it hardly counts. PLUS Osama was there while I was, and that made it just plain dangerous.

Whatever. Maybe next year.

HAGS!!!

Awww.

I get about an F- for effort today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MEEEEEEEE

Do as I say, never as I do

Posted by AllieB on April 20, 2011

I wish I could say, “disclaimer: the following story didn’t actually happen” or something, but I cannot. I swear I’m not a total social retard – like, I know I’m not – but when I fail, I do so spectacularly.

Cut to: Saturday at Kramers. I was sitting casually at the bar, as I did for entirely too long that day, and I found myself without anyone to talk to. Since I am comfortable sharing this detail, it is obvious that I am not a loser, I just am by myself sometimes. . . anyway, there I was, sitting, and I thought, hey – why not meet someone new. So I turned to the gentleman sitting a few seats down from me, assessed the situation, and tried to think of something to say.

Me: Did you know your beer is frozen?

Him: <stares at the obviously frozen beer, then back at me> Yeah, I actually did notice that.

Me: I hate it when that happens…did you, uh, bring it from home?

Him: <with a look that could only be described as pity, swivels on stool, conversation terminated>

No. He did not bring his frozen beer from home, Allie, YOU IDIOT.

I’m going to change the subject.

Last night I made a really delicious omelette – how the H do you spell omlette?!? Anyway, I sauteed some green peppers, onions, and shrooms, poured in my egg whites, added some mozz cheese and a liberal douse of Tabasco and voilà!

Admittedly, this is not a photo of my meal – mine was slightly less photogenic. Things went awry when Missy Baxter tried to eat the homemade chocolate chip cookie dough I’d just made, and I had to leave my egg-based creation unattended over open flame…whatevs, it still tasted great, and I had a grapefruit to go with it. Bon appétit, indeed.

Speaking of Français, my parents stayed here last night. I’m stuck wrassling over cookie dough with the dog while they’re sipping champagne in Champagne.

Lastly, Grindhouse Killer Burgers opened a new outpost yesterday, conveniently located on Piedmont in Morningside, complete with liquor license and patio, not to mention their famously awesome burgers. BP & Pantalones – we can hit that up for Friday lunch.

Stuff

Posted by AllieB on April 4, 2011

  1. I went to Florida for a nice long weekend, and it was super fun. Charlotte, Stanton, and Wonder Cat Madison made sure I had a lovely visit. My tan is not quite the deep chestnut brown I’ve been known to achieve, but this is because lying out is really hard work. I’m serious – between my ADHD and my…ADHD, I am no longer capable of lying there, like broccoli, for hours on end. I think this is good – being uber tan is a total faux pas these days, and I’m trying to preserve my youth. A+ weekend!
  2. It is Hotel Restaurant Week. The novelty of these things is beginning to wear off, but I never met a restaurant deal I didn’t like – the BLT Steak option for $25 is a legit bang for your buck…hmm, mayhaps I need a delicious hangar steak to get my week started off right.
  3. A very blah NCAA B’ball Championship is tonight…I can’t even think of anything else to say. Go Butler…?
  4. ON NOTICE: Reese Witherspoon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a fan, but I cannot not say something about her role in Literally, the Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen How Do You Know – I honestly I had NO idea a seemingly standard RomCom could go so horribly, abysmally awry. No one did her any favors by making her character a professional softball player, but I am still shocked by how awful the movie was – everything about it sucked, and I am not exaggerating. So…minus 1 gazillion points for that. Fortunately, her newfound friendship with Chelsea Handler will help fill this deficit, but right now she’s definitely on thin ice. And I’m concerned about this pink wedding dress that people keep talking about but of which no one has photos…pink gowns concern me in general.

Sometimes I think I need to not get so riled up about celebrity actions/news.

I WANT TO GO (back) TO THERE

OH it’s Masters Week!!! Things are lookin up. YKenna, I have such fond memories of our sojourn to Athens this same time last year…shall we go again? Let’s discuss.

21 Questions

Posted by AllieB on March 29, 2011

I often filch my material from other people. Today’s post is no exception.

NYMag has a section called 21 Questions where they ask various people…21 questions. I’m changing the Q’s to match ATL and taking the questionnaire myself – here’s an example of a real one with Sarah Hyland (Hayley from Modern Family). This is me being honest.

Name: Allie

Age: 19 years older than an 8 year old

Neighborhood: Buckhead

Occupation: Nonprofit Development with a side of online media consulting and a focus on blogging. I’ve got all kinds of balls in the air

Who’s your favorite Atlantan, living or dead, real or fictional? Ludacris or Margaret Mitchell

What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in Atlanta? This is a very difficult question. Floataway Cafe by Emory is definitely amongst the best meals I’ve ever had, but so is the Mr C’s Philly Cheesesteak. I’m an equal opportunity indulger.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? I juggle the aforementioned balls.

What’s the last thing you saw at The Georgia Dome? No one ever takes me to Falcons games…the last thing I saw at The Georgia Dome was the Monster Truck Rally. We wore fake teeth, cut off denim, some of us wore Aerosmith message tees (moi), brought in our own funnel and sat in Warrick Dunne’s box. It was one of my most fun times.

What’s your favorite medication? Airborne

What’s hanging above your sofa? Pictures of my trip to Greece with Nancy.

Who is your mortal enemy? Hilary. And birds – I hate birds.

When’s the last time you drove a car? I drove this morning to work – it takes 2.5 minutes

How has the Recession affected you? Back in 2009 my job gave me a raise and then took it away two paychecks later. That sucked.

What makes someone an Atlantan? Innate knowledge of back roads…the ability to get out of town, heading South, without getting on the Connector…running the Peachtree Road Race at least once…attending Braves games at The Atlanta Fulton County Stadium…riding The Pink Pig at Macy’s Downtown…spending an evening in the OK Cafe parking lot.

THE END. I deleted like half of the Q’s – that was the most godforsaken boring survey I’ve ever taken, and I have taken a LOT surveys. Besides, now all I can think about is how much I want to go back to Greece…

Paradise Beach, Mykonos

Seriously, wtf is this weather – it’s almost April. If I wanted it to be cold and dreary at the end of March I’d move to BUFFALO FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. The Super Paradise is looking more appealing than ever right now…Yacht Week in Greece, anyone? Bueller? Tyler Perry?
