I love kabobs

Posted by AllieB on April 11, 2011

Hallo. Let’s jump right in – hope everyone had a glorious weekend. I, of course, did. Tonight I’m hanging out with the Cali Baxters – my aunt, uncle and cousins who live in Novato, CA of whom we do not see enough. We’re having kabobs for dinner. Kabobs are my favorite.

Happy late bday to CCHaynes!! I wish we had written down the concoction we made yesterday, twas truly delightful: refreshing, tasty, and not altogether harmless…

Anyway, you know me and my relentlessly optimistic self – always someone worse off, always a silver lining, etc….well, here’s some sunshine for ya. Ho-hum about your job? Sick of sitting at a desk, maybe just kind of wishing for a change-up? Handle THIS: (source Bureaucratics: Photographic World Tour of Desk Jobs from Flavorwire.com)

Bummer. This young woman, born in 1982, works in Yemen in the regional office of the Ministry of Tithing and Alms. Her salary is US$67/month. I’m gonna guess there’s something of a dress code, as well…things are lookin up!

Thanks for the self-esteem boost Happy Birthday, Alessandra Ambrosio! I wonder what it’s like to turn 30? Guess I wouldn’t know…hope it works out for ya. Yeah, there’s really no way to level this playing field. Those Brazilian women really raise the bar. Don’t you have that ‘kini, Sis?

Guess I’ll be doing spinning today, and also looking into a new diet called ‘Fasting.’

I went to Rosebud this weekend in Viriginia Highlands and tried out the owner’s new endeavor, The Family Dog, located right across the street. It was very crowded but very promising. I had a Moscow Mule, which is apparently just white hot right now – I heard about it weeks ago from MC, who is always on the cutting edge…I don’t really branch out much re: bar beverages, but this was delish. They have a full menu, and I don’t know what’s on it but I did see some pork rinds covered in cheeto cheese going by…obviously I will be returning to try those out. BBT Says: positive first impression, need to go back.

Stuff

Posted by AllieB on April 4, 2011

  1. I went to Florida for a nice long weekend, and it was super fun. Charlotte, Stanton, and Wonder Cat Madison made sure I had a lovely visit. My tan is not quite the deep chestnut brown I’ve been known to achieve, but this is because lying out is really hard work. I’m serious – between my ADHD and my…ADHD, I am no longer capable of lying there, like broccoli, for hours on end. I think this is good – being uber tan is a total faux pas these days, and I’m trying to preserve my youth. A+ weekend!
  2. It is Hotel Restaurant Week. The novelty of these things is beginning to wear off, but I never met a restaurant deal I didn’t like – the BLT Steak option for $25 is a legit bang for your buck…hmm, mayhaps I need a delicious hangar steak to get my week started off right.
  3. A very blah NCAA B’ball Championship is tonight…I can’t even think of anything else to say. Go Butler…?
  4. ON NOTICE: Reese Witherspoon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a fan, but I cannot not say something about her role in Literally, the Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen How Do You Know – I honestly I had NO idea a seemingly standard RomCom could go so horribly, abysmally awry. No one did her any favors by making her character a professional softball player, but I am still shocked by how awful the movie was – everything about it sucked, and I am not exaggerating. So…minus 1 gazillion points for that. Fortunately, her newfound friendship with Chelsea Handler will help fill this deficit, but right now she’s definitely on thin ice. And I’m concerned about this pink wedding dress that people keep talking about but of which no one has photos…pink gowns concern me in general.

Sometimes I think I need to not get so riled up about celebrity actions/news.

I WANT TO GO (back) TO THERE

OH it’s Masters Week!!! Things are lookin up. YKenna, I have such fond memories of our sojourn to Athens this same time last year…shall we go again? Let’s discuss.

A lesson in dysfunctionality

Posted by AllieB on March 14, 2011

There’s fashion forward, and then there are pant boots (henceforth to be known as Poots).  In the same vein of the Teva Stiletto, Paris fashion house Hermès has created a hybrid of two things that need not be conjoined. Just like I do not wish to wear a stiletto sandal with the look and feel of a Teva, I think I’ll pass on pants made of leather with a high heeled platform boot attached the bottom.

For me, that I might ever don an article of clothing (well, clothing + footwear) whose name is a synonym to the word fart is a non-option. I bet that leather is really soft though…I guess, if it came to it and I absolutely had to have some Poots, it would be nice to have my rear end, legs, and feet ensconced in Poots by Hermès. Thanks, Mom, for leaving the WSJ article on my place mat – you are right; it did interest me.

Speaking of dysfunctional, the finale of the Bachelor is tonight. Neato. There’ve been what – 15 seasons of this show, 21 counting The Bachelorette, and ONE successful, longterm marriage? From where I’m sitting, it seems that the odds – they aren’t good. The whole premise of this show is just weird and contrived and abnormal, not to mention rife with infidelity…just sayin – it’s all pretty questionable. I’ll be watching last night’s episode of Shameless.

The results are in, amigo. What’s left to ponder?

It’s all happening…!

The rumors have been circulating for years – years! – but the confirmation has finally been confirmed: the sequel to Zoolander will be released in 2012. This is not exactly brand new information, but I am pleased to know that they are making progress. The script is finito and Ben Stiller even shared some basic plot details (credit: NYMag):

“Now the studio has the script and we’re at that point where we’re waiting to see what they want to do. It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.”

That really is a cool story, Hansel.*

Girl Talk did not disappoint; it was awesome! We had seats in the balcony – by far the best in the house. Except for the fact that the balcony was moving…a lot…like bouncing up and down. This concerned me a bit, but, upon further examination, I realized that the people below us would actually be much worse-off should the balcony collapse, so it was fine. I also nearly pushed Sister over the railing – ACCIDENTALLY – but that definitely would’ve put a damper on the evening. Sorry, without any irony. I’ve been noticing a flux in thoughts of the macabre ilk, recently…might need to check on that…

BOLO for a balcony!

*Zing.

Today is the most…ugh, whatever

Posted by AllieB on January 17, 2011

Today is the third Monday in January, thus, according to British psychologist Cliff Arnall, it is the most depressing day of the year. Something about weather plus holiday debts plus failed New Year’s resolutions makes it such.

Whatever his formula is, it seems fitting. I didn’t work at all last week and am in severe denial about being here today. I’m glad to be doing something, I guess…fortunately, as it’s only the third week of the year, I don’t yet feel badly about not accomplishing my non-resolution resolutions. Oh. They probably mean my ones from 2010…dammit. Actually, I did okay for myself last year – hey, things are lookin’ up…!

Anyway, if you’re looking for some ideas as to how to celebrate Blue Monday, as it is so-called, here are some ideas (per NYMag).

  • Hold yourself as you rock back and forth in the shower with your clothes on.
  • Type out a comprehensive list of all the goals you’ve failed to accomplish and all the dreams you’ll never fulfill.
  • For dinner, put on a pair of ill-fitting sweatpants and a stained sweatshirt and eat cereal out of the box while you lie in bed.
  • Watch Requiem for a Dream, followed by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, followed by Million Dollar Baby, followed by Shoah.

Neat. Those are some really great ideas. That first tip makes me think of the HORRIBLE and incredibly effective anti-meth commercials that I won’t even link to here on BBT because they are so disturbing; if you want to see them, goog “meth commercials Georgia.” But maybe wait until tomorrow – they will not help your Blue Monday blues. In that same vein (wordplay!), I wouldn’t watch Requiem for a Dream again for anything – even if my only other theatrical option was In the Land of Women, I wouldn’t watch it. Attn: Mr. Aronofsky, something is not quite right in that temple topper of yours…

I gotta say, just recognizing the bleakness of today in this manner has cheered me up significantly. Boo yah, Blue Monday.

And you can always just be glad you didn’t show up to an internationally televised awards program looking like Helena Bonham Carter did at the Golden Globes last night. I know she’s all ‘zany’ and ‘unique’ and whatever, but WTF is going on here. Be more normal, please, and, frankly, less terrifying.
