w.port atlanta: a boutique & a lifestyle

Posted by AllieB on August 15, 2012

w.port is the type of store where you walk in, fling your arms out wide, and announce, “I want everything!” Upon further perusal, you’ll find that you really do want everything – including the furniture – and begin to contemplate how you might purchase the effortlessly chic aura of owner, Emily Bean, as well. Emily is a Westport, CT native (hence the name), and she’s selling a lot more than just clothes in her new Buckhead boutique; she’s selling a lifestyle.

W.Port Boutique Atlanta; owner Emily Bean Livezey

I barged in on Emily earlier this week to hear more about the store and get a sneak peek on what all she’s been doing in there…she basically had to kick me out. Between the sumptuous clothing and the inviting, bright space, I felt like I was suddenly a lady of leisure relaxing in a beach house on the coast, probably enjoying a crisp beverage and wearing a breezy blouse (she’s got some great breezy blouses – hello, Equipment) with nary a care in the world…

WASHABLE leather jacket; button down galore; the coziest sweater ever – all will be available this fall at w.port

However, in spite of this effortlessly chic persona put forth by Emily and her store, it goes far beyond that. Diagnosed with leukemia several years ago, Emily has devoted endless hours since her recovery giving back to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by running half and full marathons to raise money on their behalf. The launch of her store will impede on her time to train, so instead she will donate two percent of her profits to the Society, as well as hosting Team in Training events for those still competing.

w.port features some lines that you can only find at the mall, thereby eradicating any need at all, whatsoever, to go to the mall (THANK GOD) such as Rebecca Taylor, but Emily, with her northern roots, is also bringing in lines that aren’t even found in the south, such as Emerson Fry. What’s more, her jewelry and accessories are truly one-of-a-kind in Buckhead, featuring some gorgeous pieces from a designer who resides in the mountainous town of San Miguel, Mexico, where she personally chooses her stones and designs her wares. She carries Presmer leather goods – of which I would like one of each – and has cultivated a new, surprise concept, one that will set her apart from any other Buckhead retailer – to be revealed upon store opening. Emily isn’t the only fashion maven behind w.port, she says she couldn’t have done this without her business partner, Pat Mastandrea, who still resides in Westport. She is a successful business owner in NYC and believed in Emily and her vision of w.port and has been an invaluable voice of reason and expertise.

w.port ranges from casual to cocktail, from a variety of colors/fabrics of Mother jeans and cords to dresses by Camilla & Marc, but focuses mostly on clothing that supersedes a specific occasion. As someone who has recently decided to get rid of pretty much everything I own and start over with classic, timeless pieces, this store is ground zero for my new wardrobe. The store, much like Emily herself, is seemingly impervious to short-lived trends – I feel like Kate Middleton would probably like to shop at w.port which, as anyone who knows me knows, is truly the highest of compliments. In the words of Emily: “[w.port is] classic and timeless and what you purchase here you’ll wear season after season after season…”

The store will open Monday, August 20 with a Grand Opening event on Thursday, September 13. To check out the newest wares, like w.port on Facebook and/or sign up for the mailing list on her website. Me, I’m looking forward to her happy hour Thursdays where she’ll stay open til 7 and have wine – with a sitting area like this, area restaurants will need to watch out…

Winning > Losing

Posted by AllieB on December 21, 2011

This is seriously getting pretty weird – I just keep winning things?? I’m concerned I’m going to get accustomed to this, causing my previously bottomed-out expectations to start rising – how unhealthy would that be. And Sister just reminded me of the $100 I won in Newnan last Thanksgiving…it’s becoming something of a pattern, and it’s not good. This time it was this beautimous pair of earrings by the very talented Mary Kelly Clary of give a penny.designs via the High Museum Wine Auction Giveaway.

I’m thrilled – those just scream ALLIE. They’re the “Gold Laura” and they are nice and big which is perfect for my opposite-of-small domepiece.

I’ve decided that a fun thing to do will be “A Year in a Review: Baxter Bark Twice.” You know, top posts, most remarkable and/or memorable events…as well as the worst posts and the least interesting things – it’s going to be a very comprehensive round-up. I’m not going to do it today because I am simply too busy, but BOLO. This epiphany of a year-end review came to me not via all of the other publications doing year-end wrap-ups, but by way of good food and friends at Mosaic. I know, I’ve said horrible things about Mosaic in the past (and on my spreadsheet), but on a gross Tuesday night when they have half-off wine and their sliders taste like a gift from the culinary gods, I’m okay with it. Granted, Danielle had to basically order our food directly from the chef as the servers were no where to be found, but I guess ya can’t win ’em all.

Merry Christmas! Love, Le Boof, H&H Home, and BBT…

..and The Duchess. How glorious do both she and her hair look?! I can’t wait to hear about what William gives her for Christmas. I’m thinking maybe a full-length chinchilla coat plus a million dollar donation to her favorite charity..? I think that sounds perfect – she’s a fashion maven with excellent taste and a heart of gold.

YOU are very creepy

Posted by AllieB on October 20, 2011

You know what makes me uncomfortable? Besides the obvious responses of close-talking, Michael Flatley Lord of the Dance, and really really really – like, really – short people, the thing that makes me most uncomfortable is the COMMENTS section on large-scale websites. Take NYMag, for instance. Their Fashion segment, The Cut, posted a picture of Jennifer Aniston at some event recently in some very short low-cut shiny dress. She looked great (pregs???), but great. It commented on the labels she sported and that was about it….but then…the comments.

MAGSTOCK: If she was pregnant, her boobs wouldn’t be so empty and lo. Pregnancy makes your boobs round, full and beautiful. Not what she has there..

QUALITO: She looks like a aging mother of three, who’s lost all her money at the Vegas casinos, so she finds the nearest Filene’s Basement or Ross For Less, and buys the cheapest low-cut outfit she can find and then hits the lounge at the MGM Grand. No need for bra or panties. They’ll just get in the way of business.

REMAINING_ANONYMOUS: Short OR low-cut, not both. The dress would be much better IMHO with a boat neckline and if she stood with her arms in such a position that would highlight the dolman sleeves.

Join me in my discomfort, won’t you? These are but three of 33 comments – most of them snarky, judgmental, and straight up creepy. Who ARE these people??? I imagine that at least 100% of them live in their parents’ basement and are actively involved in local Cuddle Parties. SNL did a skit this fall aptly named The Comments Section where they brought three homely and socially awkward people on stage, exposed their blogging comments, and then sucker punched them all in the stomach. Ha.

Fortunately, despite rising in the WWW ranks from 9,623,940 to 6,176,867 in the last week (holla), BBT doesn’t get many weird ass comments. One person got really mad at me for making fun of Hilary Duff’s novel – really? – but besides that, nada. This is good, given how uncomfortable they make me.

THURSDAY! It’s f’ing cold, but at least it’s Thursday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANI!!!! And to P, but I’m guessing P doesn’t hit up BBT all that much. Tonight we’re going bowling to celebrate, and I’m very excited because I LOVE bowling and am really good at it about 1 out of every 3 times. I have very fond memories of the bowling league of 2k6. Baberham Lincoln was our team name. Questionable. Don’t forget socks!

BYOB to Houston’s a.k.a. The Greatest News Ever

Posted by AllieB on October 7, 2011

Game changer: Houston’s allows you to BYOB and they don’t even charge a corkage fee!! This means to say, when you go to dinner with 4 other people and each of you pull out your own bottle of wine and set it on the table, they will very nicely open each bottle and serve it to you. You can enjoy a 3 hour dinner of deliciousness for only $25. Maybe re-think bringing the Trader Joe’s varietal, however, even if it is the Reserve ($4.99) label…Allie, I’m looking at you.

Rave Review: Zappos. I’ve been an Endless girl for the last couple of years, but I recently made an order on Zappos. This purse I really wanted went on sale (try again I fixed the link), and I do actually need a new bag, so I bought it. Mom, keep your comments to yourself – this is going to be hard for you to read. Anyway, I wanted it by the weekend, but I did not want to pay the extra $15 for two day shipping, so I rang them up to see what they could do. NOT ONLY did they give me two-day shipping for free, but she upgraded me to VIP status (I’ve been shopping with them since 2006) which means that I automatically get FREE OVERNIGHT SHIPPING on everything I order before 4 p.m. EST. I told the salesgirl that other online retailers could really learn a thing or two about customer service and that I was glad my call was being monitored because I wanted The Man to hear just how pleased I was.

Shake yo groove thang: Beyonce’s new video for “Countdown” is awesome, APU. I can’t embed videos unless they’re from YouTube because I’m too lazy to figure out how…so just go to the link. And you really really should.

Is there anything more delightful than a fall day in Atlanta? I think not. May all of your weekends be full of sunshine and puppies and cupcakes and red wine and Frye boots and new purses and Sashimi Tuna Salads and pasta.

Back in Rocktober 2k9, I went to go sit on the bar stool next to my buddy P.Wolfe at the bar we know as Kramerica, and I accidentally sat in a trash can instead. Pallison then created this image so the story can live on forever.

I recommend not doing this.

APU = as per usual. I didn’t know that until today.

I love that piece you’re wearing

Posted by AllieB on May 4, 2011

The Annual Met Gala is one of my favorite nights of the year because of the clothes. Yes, it turns out BBT is not only a female, but she has girly interests – the mind reels. For instance, I love Brooklyn Decker, Gwyneth and Diane Kruger (I always love Diane Kruger and that Joshua Jackson is still a real hunk, IMO):

all images from elle.com

Gorgeous pieces, all of those.

I’ve just learned the devasting news that Kristen Wiig is retiring two of her SNL characters forever, PERMANENTLY. I saw the headline and was like, “oh no, so long as it’s not Gilly or Penelope…” Obviously, it’s Gilly and Penelope. I’m so sad!!! Actually, Gilly I can do without – I’m not sure I’ve even seen one with Gilly – but I love Penelope. I love people who insist upon one-upping others – they are so easy to make fun of later. I even did a post about Penelope. RIP, Penelope.

I’ve started a new gig! As of today, I am now a “contributor” to Buckhead Patch, an online news resource that is about…Buckhead. For my first post I cheated and posted basically the same entry I wrote about Tex’s Tacos a couple of weeks ago. I made a few changes, but I figured it was a good idea to kind of ease in. Anyway, if you want to read something similar to but not identical to something you’ve likely already read – check it out. OR if you just want to show support to the good, hardworking proprietors of Tex’s, send the link on: Food Truck Phenomenon: Tex’s Tacos.

I can’t remember…. is tomorrow Friday? (credit: Char)

No, but it is Cinco de Mayo…! More on that tomolla. ¡Olé!
