Tex’s Tacos: yes, please

Posted by AllieB on April 18, 2011

While they claim they’re not “reinventing the wheel,” Mac Helms and Harrison Jones, owners/chefs of the brand new Tex’s Tacos, have somehow managed to offer a new spin on standard Tex-Mex cuisine – “Nueva Texicana” – and they nailed it. With a “home base” located in the heart of Buckhead next to our nearest and dearest, Kramerica Industries, they are also taking their product mobile – today, for instance, the truck is at the Prominence Building in Buckhead from 11:45 – 2:00.

Tex’s has only been open for a weekend, but the food was superb as was the service. I obviously plan to try everything on the menu, but so far I especially recommend the following:

  • Carne Asada taco – perfectly seasoned and cooked beef with grilled onions, cilantro, guac and queso fresco
  • Al Pastor quesadilla with pork. The Al Pastor is unlike anything I’ve ever had: slow-roasted pork marinated in chillies and pineapple topped with onions, pineapple, fresh cilantro and queso fresco. The cheese was melted to gooey perfection wherein it was more of a glue for the ingredients than an extra ingredient itself. It was seriously awesome.
  • Chips, salsa, and guac: the chips are the amazing kind like Rio Bravo used to have – paper thin and super fresh. (I am seriously having a hard time letting go of Rio Bravo even though it’s been closed for over a decade…maybe Tex’s can help???)

Mac and Harrison worked on the recipes for months and have pretty much got it figured out… I’m waiting on those cheese fries, fellas. They will frequently offer late night fare on the weekends from their store front (which is great – there is definitely a noted lack of such spots in Buckhead), yet their food is light and fresh enough to seek out for a mid-week lunch. Follow them on Twitter to find out truck locations. Everything is $5 or under AND they accept cash and credit cards.

BBT says: you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t go to here.

Between these guys and Yumbii, I may never have Taco Bell again…

Yumbii in my tummy…

Posted by AllieB on April 12, 2011

Yumbii Far Out Food, parked today at the Prominence Office Building in Buckhead, served up two of the best, most fresh and flavorful tacos I have ever had. The food truck features Asian-Mexican fare, and, while I knew it was going to be good, I didn’t know it’d be that good.

There was no line, and the service was very friendly and fast. I went with pork (per Danielle’s suggestion) and the chicken. Two made a more than adequate lunch – they definitely load on the meat, but because there’s just a sesame salad as topping and no cheese (which even I didn’t miss), it’s not like overwhelming. The chicken, I think, was my favorite of the two, with an Asian flavor akin to kabobs (I love kabobs). The tacos are $2/each – a veritable steal.

I realize how effusive my praise sounds, but I get really excited about tasty food. The website and Twitter page provide frequent updates about location and even line length. For now, their weekly lunch locations are: Buckhead Tuesday and Friday, Atlantic Station on Wednesday; Midtown Mile at Woodruff Arts Plaza (there’s a whole food truck bonanza there on Thursdays).

Yumbii is owned and run by Atlanta native Carson Young, who teamed up with Hankook Taqueria over on Collier Road to bring these delectable lunchtime treats to the streets. The Atlanta Street Food Coalition is working to make permits more readily available to vendors across the city, and I wholeheartedly support their mission.

taken from yumbii.com - I took a picture of my own, which looked exactly like these do, but the lighting in my office didn't do them justice...

Friday: it’s a date. I must acquaint myself with other menu items. I can’t wait for Tex’s Tacos to open – the cheese fries, in particular, caught my eye…food trucks are my new favorite thing.

I am reminded of Led Zep’s classic hit, Ramble On….

Great story. Compelling, and rich.

First & foremost: Happy Friday!!!! Love, Princess Allie Kate

This blog is my favorite thing.

Out of curiosity, I inquired of Goog what Kate’s official title is going to be once married to William. I learned that the answers bored me so I’m going with Princess Kate, erroneous though that may be.

Something about which I wasn’t the least bit curious but now know more than I ever could have wanted: (Thanks for this, Julia Goglia. I am so glad to be privy to this knowledge.)

UK royal bride’s virginity no longer an issue

I hope you’re as startled as I was. Can we not.

For all ATLiens – have I got a tip for you: the best dry cleaners and – AND – shoe repair place (read: they are in the SAME PLACE) is 24/7 Carriage Cleaners (yeah, I Yelp) located on Morosgo Drive off of Piedmont behind Home Depot. Not only are the clothes ready the same day, but the shoe repair is also quick and really cheap. 1 dress, 1 skirt, 1 pair of once-downtrodden-now-rejuvenated 5″ heels: $23.22. That is a steal. Plus the lady is really nice. And there’s always parking. If you go in the morning, the day workers seeking jobs may or may not think you are pulling over to pick up some hourly employees, but that’s an easily corrected misunderstanding.

Another ATL spot upon which I’d like to heap accolades is Paul’s on the Patio (I love Yelp). I have never had an unpleasant experience at Paul’s. Their wine is stupidly pricey, but they do have a list of $5 ‘tinis and other “specialty cocktails” (including cosmos for the gents (Keith)) as well as bomb ass chicken tenders. I’d never had them until last night – I usually stick with the quesadilla – but they’re delish. I realize most people get sushi, which is fine, but don’t be afraid to branch out. And now I’m hungray.

Wisdom: imparted.

Advice from Bark Twice (Numero Dos)

Posted by AllieB on March 3, 2011

The first installment of my advice-giving piece went over well, so, for lack of better fun and interactive Thursday ideas, I’m going with it. I really want to do another survey, but I’m having a hard time coming up with new ideas. Should you have a suggestion, please share. Anyway, here we go: Round 2.

Dear BBT,

My friends have been pressuring me into getting a tattoo. Of our group of 6, everyone but me has a large Chinese symbol on either their back or lower abdomen. They keep calling me a pansy or a wuss for not getting one. I mean, I guess theirs are cool – the symbols mean important, relevant things like “peace” and “serenity” and, like, “wise” or something. I don’t want them to cut me out – I don’t want to end up like “Am I a Loser” from last week! Help!

-Peer Pressured (Bulls-Eye, USA)

Dear Tramp Stamp,

Congratulations, you are the winner of this week’s DUNCE award! You have to wear your dunce hat for a full seven days so everyone knows what an idiot you are for even considering succumbing to the peer pressure of your dumbass friends and marring your skin with an erroneously translated LARGE Chinese symbol. $1,000 that your friend’s “peace” tat means “man hands.”

*Disclaimer to my pals with body art: none of this applies to you.

Dear BBT,

I want to start a blog. Should I? I mean, is it hard? I just don’t know if I’d be any good at it…

-Indecisive (Blahville, USA)

Dear If You Have to Ask, the Answer Is No.

Note to self: get a second dunce hat.

Dear BBT,

I have a crush on this guy, but I don’t think he even knows I’m alive. Well, actually, he does because last week when I was trying to make my way over to talk to him, I tripped on my huge feet and poured my drink all over his clothes. It was so embarrassing for both of us because where I spilled made it look like he had wet himself – everyone was laughing at him more than me. Anyway, he has avoided me ever since and I don’t know how to make him not hate me! Please help.

-I can’t help it (Klutztown, America)

Dear Is Your Name Allie,

Wait, seriously, are you trying to make fun of me or something because this sort of thing happens to me all of the time. Well, I don’t really have the klutz problem, but I’ve been known to pull equally imbecilic moves like inadvertently making fun of a guy’s grandmother or something. It’s very hard to properly shoulder-dip and head-toss when your foot is in your mouth – I think my only hope is to one day just stop talking. As for you, maybe you can not walk and drink simultaneously…? Your Q has me stymied – it’s like the blind leading the blind. Good luck to the both of us.

If you would like your question pondered by BBT, please send an email to regina.phalange@imakealloftheseup.bbt.

Tis a glorious day in the ATL! There’s a new Pinkberry opening in Buckhead next to Borders and CVS across from Dick’s and Target and from 6 – 10 p.m. tonight they’re serving up free yogurt! And don’t forget about the free fries from Chick-fil-A tomorrow from 2 – 4 p.m. To round out my freebie trifecta, I just reserved a Turkey Cobb Sandwich from Corner Bakery and will be retrieving said sammy next Thursday after work.

Today, I leave you with these tweets from Steve Martin. I’m telling you, I love The Twitter.

What did I say.

Posted by AllieB on March 1, 2011

Stupid Lindsay Lohan. I was Team LiLo for so long – why, I don’t know, I have this unfailing need to believe in even the most under of underdogs. But even underdogs prevail at some point – Lindsay is just an idiot. Had she managed to not steal a necklace a month after she got out of rehab, perhaps she could’ve been on this season of Dancing with the Stars. Like a gazillion people watch that show, and I guess I haven’t really seen it jump start any careers, but it certainly hasn’t hurt any. Anyway, due to her inability to not take what isn’t hers, LiLo got passed over and now we (or those who watch it – seriously, I seriously don’t) are forced to handle KIRSTIE ALLEY tango-ing her way across the dance floor in not enough clothing, trampling her poor partner in the process. And Hines Ward is on it?! That seems odd. Although the football players do tend to fare fairly well. Other dancers include Lil Romeo, Kendra, and I don’t know I got bored reading the list.

Last night I cleaned my apartment from top to bottom/wall to wall/nook to cranny and it is positively gleaming. I washed my sheets, fluffed my feather bed, FLIPPED MY MATTRESS (yeah I did), dusted, mopped, vacuumed, Windexed, Febreezed…and, to reward myself, I had a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner. I slept so well that getting up this morning was borderline impossible, and I think I’m a little cranky as a result.

To wrap things up on a more positive note, the Fur Bus is fur-tastic, un-fur-gettable, fur-bulous…, and I’m going to go write a testimonial on their website right now. I don’t know why we don’t do this more often – it is really fun and also practical! For the 24-seater it was only $40/person for four hours, plus the driver was very accommodating and there are these railings on the ceiling so you can move around and stand up without falling all over the place. It just makes good sense. Plus, I got to wear some of my Jabroni gear – I mean, what’s not to like.
