Yumbii in my tummy…

Posted by AllieB on April 12, 2011

Yumbii Far Out Food, parked today at the Prominence Office Building in Buckhead, served up two of the best, most fresh and flavorful tacos I have ever had. The food truck features Asian-Mexican fare, and, while I knew it was going to be good, I didn’t know it’d be that good.

There was no line, and the service was very friendly and fast. I went with pork (per Danielle’s suggestion) and the chicken. Two made a more than adequate lunch – they definitely load on the meat, but because there’s just a sesame salad as topping and no cheese (which even I didn’t miss), it’s not like overwhelming. The chicken, I think, was my favorite of the two, with an Asian flavor akin to kabobs (I love kabobs). The tacos are $2/each – a veritable steal.

I realize how effusive my praise sounds, but I get really excited about tasty food. The website and Twitter page provide frequent updates about location and even line length. For now, their weekly lunch locations are: Buckhead Tuesday and Friday, Atlantic Station on Wednesday; Midtown Mile at Woodruff Arts Plaza (there’s a whole food truck bonanza there on Thursdays).

Yumbii is owned and run by Atlanta native Carson Young, who teamed up with Hankook Taqueria over on Collier Road to bring these delectable lunchtime treats to the streets. The Atlanta Street Food Coalition is working to make permits more readily available to vendors across the city, and I wholeheartedly support their mission.

taken from yumbii.com - I took a picture of my own, which looked exactly like these do, but the lighting in my office didn't do them justice...

Friday: it’s a date. I must acquaint myself with other menu items. I can’t wait for Tex’s Tacos to open – the cheese fries, in particular, caught my eye…food trucks are my new favorite thing.

I am reminded of Led Zep’s classic hit, Ramble On….

I love kabobs

Posted by AllieB on April 11, 2011

Hallo. Let’s jump right in – hope everyone had a glorious weekend. I, of course, did. Tonight I’m hanging out with the Cali Baxters – my aunt, uncle and cousins who live in Novato, CA of whom we do not see enough. We’re having kabobs for dinner. Kabobs are my favorite.

Happy late bday to CCHaynes!! I wish we had written down the concoction we made yesterday, twas truly delightful: refreshing, tasty, and not altogether harmless…

Anyway, you know me and my relentlessly optimistic self – always someone worse off, always a silver lining, etc….well, here’s some sunshine for ya. Ho-hum about your job? Sick of sitting at a desk, maybe just kind of wishing for a change-up? Handle THIS: (source Bureaucratics: Photographic World Tour of Desk Jobs from Flavorwire.com)

Bummer. This young woman, born in 1982, works in Yemen in the regional office of the Ministry of Tithing and Alms. Her salary is US$67/month. I’m gonna guess there’s something of a dress code, as well…things are lookin up!

Thanks for the self-esteem boost Happy Birthday, Alessandra Ambrosio! I wonder what it’s like to turn 30? Guess I wouldn’t know…hope it works out for ya. Yeah, there’s really no way to level this playing field. Those Brazilian women really raise the bar. Don’t you have that ‘kini, Sis?

Guess I’ll be doing spinning today, and also looking into a new diet called ‘Fasting.’

I went to Rosebud this weekend in Viriginia Highlands and tried out the owner’s new endeavor, The Family Dog, located right across the street. It was very crowded but very promising. I had a Moscow Mule, which is apparently just white hot right now – I heard about it weeks ago from MC, who is always on the cutting edge…I don’t really branch out much re: bar beverages, but this was delish. They have a full menu, and I don’t know what’s on it but I did see some pork rinds covered in cheeto cheese going by…obviously I will be returning to try those out. BBT Says: positive first impression, need to go back.

Friend or Foe?

Posted by AllieB on March 23, 2011

Emoticons: Friend or Foe?

BBT says…FRIEND! I’m a convert. Well, within reason. For instance, used sparingly in emails amongst friends, emoticons can be the perfect touch of irony or sincere emotion. I will say, I think it’s best not to cross the gender barrier with smiley faces, at least not until you’ve established specific boundaries pertaining to their use. Personally, I like the occasional :) or :( but, and I think this goes without saying, my most favorite and oft used is The Flat Face :| There are few such evocative combinations of punctuation marks.

Chris Brown: Friend or Foe?

FOE! He was very scary on Good Morning America yesterday (which I did not see until this AM when the Today show aired the clip – Betsy, Pal, and anyone else who watches GMA: you are dumb.). Get it together dude, people were just starting to forget what you did to Rihanna’s face. I definitely like Yeah 3X, but this Dennis Rodman alter-ego has gosta go.

William & Kate Lifetime Movie: Friend or Foe?

Duh. [countdown date=2011/4/18-21:00:00] [timer] until the Premiere!!! [/countdown]

So, I still want to do another survey, but I need your help. I’m even sharing a real email address (alliebaxter@gmail.com) to which you can send your thoughts. I’m dead serious: help a lady out.

In the meantime, I will be working on my own, much more interesting version of March Madness (credit: Kacy Lerkhof). I am much better equipped to predict the outcome of Pimento Cheese v Country Ham Biscuit (obviously the former – by an embarrassing margin) than that of two, in my mind, random basketball teams.

Mmmm Tasty

Posted by AllieB on March 22, 2011

I miss J Simps :(

Two of Georgia’s most acclaimed culinary artistes, Hugh Acheson and Linton Hopkins (Westminster Class of ’85…!), have made it past the second round of the illustrious James Beard Foundation Award nomination process. A has wisely suggested that we do a tour of their local eateries to show our support. In ATL we could go to Empire State South for Hugh and HF for Linton (I’m lumping Eugene into HF – hope that’s ok), and then go on our annual spring sojourn to Athens and visit The National and Five & Ten. A: I’m so in I’m almost out.

my ethos likes their ethos. www.thenationalrestaurant.com

I love meal-centric excursions. I’ve been known to go out of my way for something I really, really wanted…

  • Rio Bravo, Spring 2002. Sydney and I really wanted homemade tortillas, and I called around Athens to see if anyone made them…On the Border tried to connect me to their wholesale tortilla dealer in El Paso. Um, I think not OtB. We drove the 45 mins to Pleasanthill Road to indulge in the doughy deliciousness and strawberry daquiris. RIP Rio Bravo.
  • Philly Connection, Winter 2004. There was one outside Watkinsville attached to a suspicious off-brand gas station…I had three failed attempts before I finally made it. Partially due to my questionable sense of direction, this was also because I was always sure I had gone too far and was about to wind up in Deliverance. It was worth it, though, when I finally made it – Philly Connection is always worth it.

TMI. I feel like I should talk about something other than food…yoga! I did yoga yesterday. I am zen; Meet & Greet Yogi Allie; my inner peace has found peace.

And, lastly, my most favorite part of today: in honor of  WJWIII’s birth….

Fat (Phat?) Tuesday

Posted by AllieB on March 8, 2011

Just to be authentic, I goog’ed, “mardi gras catch phrase” and the first result, in all of Google, was “Throw me something, Mister!” That wasn’t…quite what I was looking for…

At any rate, today is Fat Tuesday, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, thus today is the day when we celebrate the last of our guilty pleasures before giving them up for 40 days. Calm yourselves (froooooooost yourselves) – I have made a decision as to what I am giving up, but first….we talk about cheeseburgers.

Bocado…come on down!!! Pallison was in town, and a bunch of us went to dinner at Bocado. Bocado’s burger is just as awesome as I heard it was, and I’m having a hard time designating which I like better: theirs or HF’s. Foodies around town, though totally “over” this burger craze, seem to give the final edge to Bocado. For that reason, and because of my underdog syndrome, I’m inclined to choose HF:  they were first and you have to work a little to try it. You can’t just saunter in at lunch time on a Tuesday and get it, nor can you go for dinner at 8 on a Saturday and order one; you have to make effort to enjoy their double stack of goodness (after 10 M – Sat, brunch on Sundays), and – in accordance with my underdog complex – I always like a challenge. Plus, when I go with A&K (and I only go w A&K), I feel like a celebrity. Winner: Holeman & Finch.

For Lent this year, I am giving up Hoegaardens AND stuffed pasta. I know, the mind reels. I feel kind of silly – I realize that the average person reading this, who may not have intimate knowledge of my day to day habits, might scoff at my choices, saying how could anyone consume enough of those things to make giving them up an actual sacrifice. Hi, my name is Allie, and I have a serious problem when it comes pasta of the stuffed variety. And I’m tossing in Hoegaardens because they’re stupidly expensive and have like 1,999 calories. So, there you have it: no mas.

To continue my week of gluttony, tonight I will be enjoying the wonder that is Antica Pizza. I’m leaning towards the Pomodorini…with a side of Two Buck Chuck, obvs.

Birthday week: YKenna, AnsGhegan, BGeorge, ECowan…Mardi Gras tranny wishes you a great one!
